Happy Holidays everyone! I'm in NY with my family for x-mas and New Years. Since I don't have access to my usual supplies I'm working up a fully rendered study digitally of the second painting in the " Quest for the Elephant King" series. Thought I'd try something new with rendering a full grisalle digitally and then painting it in oil's.We will see how that works but in the meantime I've gotta put a few more passes on this thing before I can go to color...back to work!
EDIT:refined line version .thanks to Frank Lin and Monico Chavez for the advice.

Decided over the break to do some experimenting in my moleskine sketchbook. Because its made up of watercolor paper, you can use mediums like acrylics , gouache and (of course ) watercolors in it. With these little studies , I wanted to combine my pen an ink style with my opaque painting style. Not sure if its anything , but I'm glad I tried something different.Lastly, any thoughts are welcome . More to come soon.

Hey everybody , I hope your thanksgivings all went off without a hitch .This November , I was lucky enough to have my name in two magazines this month American Artist Magazine and the Artist's Magazine ! For American Arist Magazine , my old school The Academy of Art University put out an add and featured the work of Claudia Rilling , Heather Burton and myself. And for the Artists Magazine , my name was included in the Finalists category for their Annual Art Competition. This is the same competition that I had talked about back in July.

I have officially begun paintings for my new body of work entitled "Win/Place/Show" which is a documentation of the ritualistic and religious subtext that underlies the horse-racing culture of my hometown racing tracks of Belmont and Aqueduct. I've been working on this project on and off for about a year and change so Im very excited to finally start putting together the final paintings. More to come very soon....

Over the weekend I decided that I needed to start drawing finished things on a regular basis. For a while I did these observational drawings in undergrad and had continued to do them every so often in grad school but eventually stopped . But since I have used the observational drawing as an assignment in a College Life Drawing class that I am teaching , I feel the need to restart the practice (plus I'll only get better) . These things demand a lot of concentration and editing since thy are just straight pen and ink with no underdrawing. Funny thing is for a time I though my old undergrad teacher Alberto Rey was the only person who did them. But after some looking, I came to find there are a ton of artists that do them , one of my favorite being bad ass Illustrator Tin Salamunic. Anyways more to come soon !

In my attempt to get a hang of digital painting I did a clothing study of one of the characters in the next painting ill be doing . I'm getting there.....

After being happy with the first value sketch/composition idea and after completing the first of two trips for my move to buffalo ,I started another picture. My plan is to get reference in one shot and paint both of them at the same time. While this is the beginning of the idea, I like where it is going and decided to post it . More revisions to come !
